《Omjee the Wizard(Korean Folk Stories)》는 미국 Milton Bradley사(1925년) 초판본으로 미국인 선교자이며 언어학자인 헐버트가 한국에 체류하는 동안 채집한 것을 영어 동화로 옮긴 것이다. 우리나라 동화는 당시 전무할 정도로 많지 않았던 아동문학 중 영문판으로 매우 귀중한 희귀 자료라고 할 수 있다. 모두 17편을 수록하고 있는데 신데렐라나 이솝우화를 연상시키는 내용으로 여러 가지 컬러 도판과 함께 실었다. ‘Sotkary’라는 한 소년이 태평양을 건너가는 것으로 시작하여 우리나라 전통 방식인 ‘온돌방’이나 ‘지게(jiggy)’ 등 과거 생활 풍습도 잘 묘사되어 있다. 이것은 보고 체험한 우리 문화를 외국에 알리고 소개하려는 취지로도 엿보이는 대목이다. 한국을 사랑했고 교육에 남다른 심혈을 기울였던 헐버트 박사는 1950년에 건국훈장 독립장을 추서 받았다.

저자 : Homer B. Hulbert * 호머 헐버트(Homer B. Hulbert, 1863~1949) 1886년에 한국에 처음 들어와 근대식 교육기관과 영어 교육 필요성을 느껴 근대식 학교 설립을 추진하였으며, 최초의 근대식 국립 학교인 육영공원이 개교하고 교사로 활동하였다. 1901년에는 ‘코리아 리뷰(영문 잡지)’를 창간하고 한국어 공부에도 매진하여 한국어 교재도 발간할 정도였다. 외교 고문과 정치 등에 참여하여 한국 문화를 또한 소개하는 데 일익을 담당하였다. 그는 당시 외국으로는 처음으로 사회장을 치러 서울 양화진에 안장되었다. 그의 대표 저서〈The Passing of Korea〉, , 등이 있다.
